We were struck by the warm spirit of the 20th Season celebration. A number of audience members mentioned that hadn't realized how much they had missed in the past 20 years. A few of them indicated that they hadn't taken the initiative to come to an HG production until this one and that they couldn't believe the talent that resides here in Tioga County. Our mission statement indicates that we seek to provided opportunities for people of all ages to enrich and empower their lives through the performaing arts. Our lives were certainly enriched and empowered witnessing the incredible dedication and talent that was demonstrated at the three performances of the Gala. Thanks again to Indigo Wireless for sponsoring the event. And BRAVO to all the performers.
Ellen Schafer returned to revisit three of her memorable characters: Sister Amnesia in the NUNSENSE series; the mother in HONK; and Vera Sanders in SMOKE ON THE MOUNTAIN. A number of relative newcomers to HG commented on how sorry they are that they were never in a show with Ellen, or had not taken the initiative to see a show that she was in. The woman is a hoot. I know many audience members rank Sister Amnesia as an all-time comedic high, but my vote goes to the stern and devout Vera. When the June bug falls into her dress...move over Lucille Ball.
Bryce Zaparzinki, an eighth grader from Mansfield, delightfully opened the whole show with his invitation from OLIVER to “Consider Yourself” part of the family. The kid can sing, act, and dance. And if you've been reading the sports section of this paper, you know the kid can pitch, too. Last week he pitched the winning championship game in Mansfield against Selinsgrove. Bravo, Bryce.
We've got a bit of a breather from productions for a few weeks, but don't forget to sign up for the Children and Youth Choirs, and to get your reservations for SOPHIE TUCKER.
