The first rehearsal with everyone (except Georgie) in the cast. This moment of hearing all the voices for the first time really jazzes me. After all the struggle of coming up with a cast, this moment is kind of the litmus test: did I choose correctly? Even though I encourage the cast members not to worry about expression and delivery of lines, it's difficult not to evaluate just what we've come up with. I think I am fairly objective at these moments and am able to look beyond the un-polished-ness of the read to see the potential. Of course, that's what the agony of the decision-making weeks is all about: trying to see beyond to the potential. So by this first read--hopefully--I've arrived at the place where I can see the potential and am ready to dig in to get everyone to that same realization.
As we worked through the scene when the nun arrives at the apartment, everyone has a chance to be the focus of attention. As we read through it I began breathing freely: this cast is going to work. Whew.
