It is perhaps the highlight of the holiday season for me…the singing of Handel’s MESSIAH with a whole bunch of community people. When Charlie Jacobson conducts the downbeat on that overture, I nearly dissolve into tears…every year. I think I’ve heard the Christmas portion of the MESSIAH more times than I’ve heard any other piece of music. My parents were both soloists and I grew up hearing the bass and alto solos sung around the house like most people these days watch people text. And Dad was a conductor so every year either a church choir or a community choir would sing the whole Christmas portion. And even with all those hearings, I am still moved.
The soloists this year were terrific. Three MU students and two community members nailed those solos with confidence, skill, and warmth. Meghan Galloway, Kimberly Bemis, KimberlyBodhorn, and David Wert ushered us right into the whole Christmas story with Handel’s special touch. Derek Gracey sang double duty with all the base solos. When he sang “Thus saith the Lord…” one sat up and paid attention. St. Paul’s heard the voice of God.
Ellen Murphy, Brad Holtman, Kay Galloway and two MU students—Justin Stark and Amanda Trimpey—played at least three million notes each…and played them beautifully. It’s no small task for a small instrumental ensemble to be able to lead a hodge-podge of singers of all different singing abilty levels and experience levels in this great choral work. Bravo.
Add Mike Galloway and Hope Jennings on “And the Glory of the Lord” and “Hallelujah”, and the work is about as rich and full as one could ask for.
I am grateful to be in a community that supports such an event. The Cheskos and their Sherwood Motel help to make it all happen with their sponsorship. The event is cherished by the many community members and MU students who choose to avail themselves of the opportunity. For those who missed it…you really missed a glorious part of this holiday season. Mark your calendars for December 9, 2012!
